Eat the Frog

Mark Twain is quoted with

“If it’s your job to eat a frog, it’s best to do it first thing in the morning. And If it’s your job to eat two frogs, it’s best to eat the biggest one first.”

Sometimes the quote is changed a bit to say if you eat the frog first thing in the morning, nothing will be worse throughout your day. The phrase “Eat the Frog” was then turned into a business productivity model by Brian Tracy. And in short, it means, do the hard and important thing first, then the rest of the day will go smoothly.

I was first told about this model about 15 years ago. I was working with a couple of members of the church where I was serving to help me with administrative aspects of my job. Both of the women I met with were successful business women and I found our monthly breakfast meetings helpful (and tasty because breakfast tacos make everything better).

There have been days along the way that I really don’t want to eat the frog and in fact will do just about anything to avoid it. However on the days that I can summon my courage, take a deep breath, and eat the frog, the day usually is smoother and more productive.

What the frog is changes from day to day, but there is always something in our day that is important and takes more self motivation than other aspects of work or family. What is your frog? Can you eat the frog today? How about tomorrow.
