Improv and Kansas nice or the Yes, but

Having lived in the Midwest for the past decade, I have come across what I have heard termed “Kansas nice.” I have also heard it connected with other states in the Midwest. What the term means is that we don’t want to hurt people’s feelings and instead of being opening confrontational, Kansas nice is more about being passive aggressive.

It was called “Kansas City Nice” and was a feature on the local NPR station KCUR. Check out their article here. So you might encounter people who seem nice, but they are just as likely to be a bit underhanded and passive aggressive instead.

Yes, but is the Kansas nice way of saying no in improv. You do acknowledge the statement or the idea presented from your partner, however the but, negates what has happened before. So in life you tend to be “Kansas (or where ever) nice”? Or can you practice yes, and?
