Response to He Gets Us

I had seen these ads prior to the Super Bowl and I had heard the hype. I went and checked out their website. In and of themselves, the ads are okay. Black and white photo montage with a few video clips. Voiceovers with a story about Jesus set into a modern context. On a basic level, Jesus walked among humanity and lived as one of us so yes, on a human level, Jesus gets us. He was born to a teen mom, he was anxious, he had compassion on people and had to take time to care for himself.

But, I think the ads while not incorrect miss some big points. Jesus came to live and walk among humans and to show how to live in accordance with God’s love and law. He practiced radical hospitality and love. He healed people, sat with outcasts, touched the untouchables. But that was never addressed in these videos. For me the videos did not go far enough in the sense that yes, Jesus was human like us and understands us, but that isn’t really the point of Christianity. We are to follow Jesus, not the other way around. So yes, Jesus gets us…but that really isn’t the point.
