Storms

After a week of snow and rain in California, a huge system that tracked across the upper Midwest and the northeast, and last night tornados in Oklahoma, many people across the United States have been through some serious storms. Historic levels of snow have made travel ill advised in California and many in parts of Michigan (and I am sure other places as well) have not had power for 4 days. I had friends in Oklahoma who lost homes and cars and others in the same storm system who had high winds and rain.

Storms come through our lives and sometimes leave a swath of destruction, sometimes not, but we can never tell what will come. And even those who are in the same cluster of storms will have very different experiences. The same is true of life.

We all encounter storms in life. However, our particular situation can be very different from others around us. I think back to the shut down during the pandemic in 2020. For some people it was working from home and a more time to read or hike or relax. For others, it was struggling to make ends meet because of the type of work they did. And still for others there was no relaxing because there were children who needed to be tended to or who were trying to do online school. We all went through 2020 in very different ways.

Take a moment in the coming days to offer prayers for those in the path of devastation. If you are in an area that has been affected and you can help, do so (and I have seen lots of helpers on social media). And as we move forward, let us remember that everyone has a unique experience of the storms in life both real and metaphorical, so let’s be kind and gentle with one another.
