Standing up for Women

There are 5 women suing the state of Texas over the abortion laws in that state. One woman, Amanda Zurawski has been in Washington DC and has called out her senators because she almost died due to the law. You can read her story here. The issue comes with the medical emergency clause and how it has tied the hands of doctors who are treating women.

This is a form of violence against women.

The Supreme Court striking down Roe v Wade was a violent act against women. It allowed states to pass laws that take control over their own health care decisions away from a woman as well as her doctors. Taking power out of the hands of a woman because you may not like her decisions is a form of violence. You don’t have to like the decisions someone makes, but they are not yours to make for them. People should be allowed to choose what is right for their bodies. They should be able to have medical consultations to help inform them of the stakes of their decisions.

This same issue of control over your own health issues comes up again in the state of Texas as the state wanted a national ban on Mifepristone – the abortion pill. This medication was cleared by the FDA in 2000 and the lawsuit filed will throw into question the FDA regulations around new medications as well as making it harder once again for women to have control over their bodies and their health care decisions.

Again, you don’t have to agree. You don’t have to like it. But shouldn’t every individual have the right to make their own health care decisions?
