Sometimes I have it, but often I don’t. I don’t pray for it, as it means more practice. Which is honestly probably what is needed. Over the past few weeks I have witnessed some people with incredible patience. Teachers who work with our kids and go over things until they understand. My son’s competitive soccer coach who seeks to wrangle a bunch of 6-8 year old boys on a soccer field and help them learn the game.
Watching this coach – I think part of his patience stems from his love of the game. HE played professionally and has coached for many years. He wants these boys to love the game and to learn to play it better. I am sure he gets frustrated, but he doesn’t raise his voice. He redirects or has them do push-ups and then keeps going. He holds his head and doubles over with laughter as they completely forget the skill they just worked on for 15 minutes.
I think his patience comes from joy. Joy of the game, joy of seeing the energy and excitement of the boys, and joy in doing what he loves to do. May we all find joy and therefore patience in the days ahead.
