All Saints Day and All Saints Sunday were rough for me this year. Six weeks after losing my dad, hearing the strains of “For All The Saints” brought tears to my eyes. Then as we sang the opening hymn (which I picked) “Love Divine, All Loves Excelling” the last verse got me.
Finish then, Thy new creation; pure and spotless let us be;
let us see Thy great salvation perfectly restored in Thee.
Changed from glory into glory, till in heav’n we take our place,
till we cast our crowns before Thee, lost in wonder, love, and praise.
I love this hymn. I love this verse. But it was overwhelming in the moment. The sermon I preached was on Revelation 7 and the saints robed in white, gathered around the throne. A reminder that the brokenness and suffering of this world is not all there is, one day we too shall be gathered with the saints around the throne lost in wonder, love and praise.
