Wintering

I came across this poem from Donna Ashworth her book Life

You may think yourself lazy, or flawed. Yet your body is made of almost exactly the same elements as the stars. Your bone composition matches the coral in the seas and you, my friend, are ruled by the moon and the sun. Whether you like it or not. So no, you are not lazy, Nature is simply pulling you to slow, like the life, the floral and fauna around you. It is not your moment to rise. It is winter, you are wintering. And you are right on time.

As I write this post, it is a gray, deary, cold winter day in Kansas. A good day to curl up with a hot drink and a great book and get cozy. I think many Americans struggle with the thought of “wintering” as it feels like we are being lazy. Our culture is so focused on how much you can produce that we forget that we need rest as well.

Fields must lie fallow. There are times and seasons for all things – take a look at Ecclesiastes 3. Many plants and trees that above ground are dormant, are doing work beneath the soil (as long as the soil doesn’t get too cold). So give yourself a time to be at rest. Give yourself a chance to winter (yes, I am talking to myself as well here). Slow down. Rest. Recharge.

  1. This completely speaks to me on this cold, gray Kansas day. “Nature is simply pulling you to slow.” Love this. And excited about your new endeavor–congrats!

  2. A car accident. Dealing with insurance, and buying another car have eaten away my wintering time. I love wintering. So essential for this gardener. A day without an alarm clock or deadlines is a gift I love receiving!
