I was in a workshop that was about improv and one of my nephews is quite amazing at improv so my interest in the topic continues to grow. One of the primary tools that we talked about in the workshop and one that my nephew did with a Sunday school class he led for me is the art of yes and….
Yes and continues the thought. So perhaps we are talking about going somewhere for dinner.
“Would you like to go out to eat?”
“Yes, and can we also get dessert?”
“Yes, and we can have an appetizer too. So where would you like to go?”
“Let’s get burgers and then we can go get ice cream.”
“Yum! That sounds great and then we could do something fun like a movie.”
“Yes and can I pick the movie since you picked last time?”
To use yes and is to keep conversation or a scene moving. If you have ever done this with a group things can get very silly as people add random topics and ideas, but the key is to keep going. It is about accepting the idea presented by your partner(s) and then in general, continuing the thought and adding to it. There are also ways in which you can accept the idea and alter it or even reverse it but the premise is that you have accepted what is presented.
What would happen if you played yes, and… in your daily life? Or go to the community thoughts page and join into the yes and discussion.
