Baseballs and Life Lessons

Today is Opening Day. For baseball fans it is a day to celebrate the return of their favorite sport and pastime. For others of us, we will watch, but not get caught up (no pun intended) in all the hype, but we enjoy games from time to time and may even have a favorite team to follow.

Last Saturday was the opening baseball game for the school my children attend. My son and I went to one of the double header games. We did this to support some of the boy son the team. Last fall when my son was having some struggles, we connected through a friend of mine with some of the senior baseball boys. We met with them after school once a week and they helped my son with batting practice and catching and something I didn’t expect.

One of the young men is the catcher for the team and a very good batter. When he was younger he too had struggled. I felt like the dad of this young man understood a bit of what I was struggling with and I most certainly think the high school boy understood a bit about my son.

While they were batting, my son had a great hit off the tee. The high school student said, “Think about what you did to get that great hit and do it again.” As the afternoon went on, the high school boy started telling my son, “When you have a good day at school (this one had been particularly bad), figure out what you did so you can repeat it, do it again. Just like an at bat. When I have a great at bat, I want to try to do all the same things I did before.” It was a lovely lesson about life all while hitting baseballs.

  1. Thanks for this story. Sports can teach life lessons. I had the opportunity of going with my granddaughter to a volleyball tournament this last weekend. She was having trouble finding friends in this new group. I think she feels more included after our weekend together.
