Drag Queens

There are several states which are working to pass anti drag queen legislation currently. This is aimed primarily at the drag queen story hours that various libraries have held. I have not been to a drag queen story hour, but my understanding is it is a performer in drag who is reading a children’s book at a library. If it is hosted by the library and the library is picking books then I have ZERO problem with it.

I have been to a couple drag shows. They were adult entertainment in adult venues and I knew what I was going to see. They were hilarious and fun. One was a musical review and to watch the drag queens dance and sing was amazing! One performer lost her wig but grabbed it and kept right on going.

So essentially, we are getting into territory where the debate is free speech is my right and it is only your right if you agree with me and my values. That is problematic.

If a library has a drag queen story hour, then they are hiring a performer, not unlike various children’s entertainers who sing and play guitar or do magic or some other form of entertainment. The library or other group has hired a someone to read a story. If you don’t like the performer of choice, then don’t go.

I am not a Taylor Swift fan, so I don’t go to her concerts, but I also don’t stop others from going. I can take offense at something and not engage with it. For all the people up in arms over drag queens, if you don’t like them, don’t go see them. If you do not want your child listening to a drag queen read a children’s book, don’t go to the story hour. You have choices and are free to make them. And maybe, just maybe, freedom of speech applies to every drag performer as well as to you. If you don’t like it, don’t go, but also, you don’t get to tell the rest of us what to do.
