  • Truth has no Party

It was never about red. It was never about blue. It was about a man— a felon, a fraud, a con, a lie. A man who never looked past his own reflection, who only saw gold when we saw fire. And then came the billionaire, whispering promises laced with dollar signs, turning power into private

  • On this day which commemorates the life and witness of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. I find that much of what Dr. King preached and wrote resonates in the world today. In worship yesterday we heard several excerpts from Dr. King alongside scripture. One of the excerpts was from a sermon given in 1954,

  • What is God up to?

Advent has begun and the waiting and anticipation for the birth of the Christ Child has too. Well, except for the crazy that goes along with December. The birth story of Jesus in Luke 2 begins with the fact that Caesar Augustus called for a census. He told people to go to their home towns

  • God of Second Chances

In the 2002 movie Jonah: A Veggie Tales Movie, as Jonah is in the belly of the whale, the prophet laments that he disobeyed God, and what follows is a catchy gospel number that God is a God of second chances. I love the chorus Praise the Lord, He’s the God of Second Chances. You’ll

  • Psalm 23, part 3

I thought I had published this piece, but evidently I forgot to and it has been sitting around. So here is part 3. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord  my whole life long. For me, this is the verse

  • Psalm 23 part 2

The shepherd to provides for all our needs, gives us rest and leads us in the ruts of righteousness. Now we come to the dark valley. Which in looking at the Hebrew is not as much a valley as a deep crevice or gorge. The picture below is a slot canyon in Jordan. Truly you

  • Psalm 23

A familiar psalm for many, often associated with funerals. However, there is more to be uncovered. I memorized the King James Version when I was in 3rd grade Sunday school. “The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures.” The flowery language of the KJV has

  • Tragedy at the Parade

As we gathered for Ash Wednesday and a service that reminds us of our mortality, that reminder was very present throughout the Kansas City Metro today. We pray for those who were killed, for those who were injured, and for all who were traumatized by this horrific event. We thank those officers who ran toward

  • Being like a seed

The Gospel of John (12:24) has Jesus talking about a kernel of wheat. “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit.” Seeds, if not planted won’t do much but stay as a seed. When seeds are

  • We have just entered the season of Advent. This is a season when we wait with expectant hope for the return of Christ. We have many traditions that help us await the child to be born and laid in a manger, but we are also waiting for the return of Christ. We know the imperfections

One response to “Thoughts”

  1. I admire your willingness to trust God, and venture out into a relatively unknown future. As someone who completely changed careers at age 53, I encourage you to continue to seek guidance from the Spirit and go for it wholeheartedly! Your new career is much more nebulous than mine, but I have every confidence that your talent and determination will pull you through the most difficult times. I knew when it was time for me to change. God will also lead you through each new step. It’s been my experience that He/She/They moves quickly and decisively. Enjoy the ride. I cannot wait to see what you will do.
